Expanding a global focus on establishing industry critical standards for Virtual & Augmented Reality. International
Daniel Colaianni, Chief Executive of the Academy of International Extended Reality, a not for profit organisation supporting companies in the VR & AR (XR) sectors has today been appointed to steer and lead the United Kingdom’s National Standards Committee IST/31 Immersive Technologies under the British Standards Institution, UK National Standards Body.
Building on extensive experience in leading XR strategy on behalf of the Academy’s board (comprised of Facebook, Disney, Microsoft & more) and work on rapid XR adoption with organisations such as Saudi Aramco, Mayor of London’s office & more, Daniel aims to work with IST/31 Committee members to develop standards which prepare the industry for a new era of readiness for the coming immersive revolution.
When asked about this new responsibility Daniel said, “Our industry is innovating at an unprecedented pace. Governments & businesses alike require clear guiding principles that keep us on course for a safe, thriving and prepared world for immersive technology. Standards are an important means for us to converse with national and international stakeholders on a shared vision and common understanding in how we can innovate in tandem while ensuring we are addressing security, safety and usability aspects to immersive technology. Our new work with BSI enables us to achieve this and more, on both a national and international stage.”

The IST/31 is responsible for developing standards for immersive technologies (AR/MR/VR) and at the forefront of the latest conversations surrounding the usage of such new technologies, it has come to AIXR and BSI’s attention that there is an inherent need to set the ‘golden’ standards and policies revolving around their usage and adoption across a plethora of associated technology sectors. The committee group is diverse with members from Rolls-Royce, Foster & Partners, BAE Systems, Huawei Technologies, PwC and more.
The immediate priorities for the committee include understanding and establishing a clear approach for challenges faced within the industry such as health and safety (including hygiene), secure use of such technology (including an approach to data, metrics, and terminology).
