What does an XR Games Writer do?

Game writers are responsible for writing the story. Their involvement can range from brainstorming initial story ideas to writing for particular characters.

In extended reality (XR), players can interact with more freedom than ever before, and this can mean there is a need for a lot of creative writing. For example, getting non-player characters to react to your actions can make for an immersive experience.

What’s an XR Games Writer good at?

  • Collaboration: must be able to work with the designers and developers and communicate to keep the game consistent in tone and style
  • Dramatic writing: XR games often do not have a straightforward narrative, so you must be able to write flexibly for an interactive story
  • Flexibility: game writing is a process of constant editing and revision – as changes are requested by game designers, you must be able to rewrite lines

Where can being an XR Games Writer take me?

Many game development studios are beginning to develop their first XR games. As someone specialising in XR, you will have an advantage when it comes to applying to the major studios developing AAA titles. Alternatively, you might join a small studio and develop an award winning game, transforming into an industry leader in XR.

There are promotion opportunities, you can become a more senior game writer, a game designer, narrative designer or the creative director of a project. These roles allow you for increasingly more control over the overall direction of the project.

How do I become a XR Games Writer?

To become a writer, it is a good idea to become proficient at using the English language, in particular creative writing. Read lots of books and try writing some of your own. At the same time, get involved with XR and try to play some games, while thinking of how to make convincing characters and narrative. In essence, your job will be to combine these two things.

For a degree, you will be best off with a degree in creative writing or script writing, with a focus on fiction, storytelling and narrative voices. You will also need an impressive portfolio of compelling writing, which is why it is a good idea to practice when you can.

If you have aspirations of becoming a game writer, but don’t have a degree or are struggling to get a foot in the door, try finding an internship or entry level position. This will give you the opportunity to network and advance in the company, or have a stronger application next time.
